Timing chain/tensioner/slides replacement

The timing chain is an element of the valve timing system, responsible for synchronizing the operation of the crankshaft and camshafts. Unlike a timing belt, the timing chain with gears is located inside the engine and is amply lubricated with motor oil, which increases its lifespan. On the other hand, it's impossible to visually assess the technical condition of the assembly without removing the valve cover.

Signs of timing chain malfunction include:

• Metallic knocking in the cylinder block head at low and medium engine speeds.
• Noise heard in the area of the camshaft drive.
• You can hear pops in the muffler..
• Exhaust gases have a blue tint.
• Reduced engine oil level in the crankcase.
• Decreased engine power.
• Ringing metallic sounds during car acceleration.
• Engine operates intermittently.
• Short-term failures in the operation of a cold engine.
• The engine overheats quickly and severely.

Hearing such sounds, the car owner should promptly visit the nearest auto service for diagnostics.

While driving, pay attention to the "smoothness" of movement. Sudden braking or intense revving can also negatively affect the chain's condition and may provoke a break.

Consequences of malfunctions in the timing chain drive include:

• A slackened chain jumping several teeth, usually at engine start-up.
• Breakage of the chain tensioner.
• Formation of a groove in the cylinder head made of aluminum alloy.
• The chain may break, resulting in damaged valves and guide bushings, a through hole in the top of the piston, and a dent on the cylinder head surface, necessitating complete replacement.

Replacing the timing chain

The complexity of the procedure involves dismantling auxiliary equipment and disassembling the power unit. It's recommended to change the hydraulic tensioning device, chain guides, and sprocket set along with the timing chain. Replacing these parts together can prevent future breakdowns. After all assembly operations, the engine's operation is checked. The noise level during engine operation depends on how properly the chain is tensioned. If increased chain operation noise is heard at low speeds, the chain tension needs readjustment.
