A bad alternator can take a toll on your vehicle’s electrical system, affecting the dashboard, lights, multimedia, AC, etc. This is because the alternator is one of the "pulsing hearts" of your vehicle's electrical and charging systems, acting as a power supply to many components. If you suspect an alternator issue in your car, read our checklist below to try and find similar symptoms to yours.
1. Dim or Flickering Headlights
A failing alternator struggles to provide consistent electrical power, causing headlights to dim or flicker.
The vehicle’s dashboard illuminates the battery icon when the alternator fails to charge the battery adequately.
A bad alternator fails to recharge the battery, eventually leaving it drained and unable to start the car.
4. Electrical Failures
Insufficient power output from the alternator can cause issues like malfunctioning power windows, radio, or dashboard lights.
5. Strange Noises (Whining or Grinding)
Worn bearings inside the alternator or a loose serpentine belt can create whining or grinding sounds near the engine.
6. Burning Rubber or Electrical Smell
Overheating in the alternator or a slipping belt can cause a distinct burning smell.
7. Car Stalls or Struggles to Start
A failing alternator can't supply enough power to keep the engine running or to start the car reliably.
